Frequently Asked Questions
Question | Answer | |
---|---|---|
#1 | Can I use a faith based curriculum? | You may use a faith based curriculum and submit samples from this curriculum for your AWR’s. Faith based curriculum must be purchased privately and can not be reimbursed by Gateway Academy. Public funding does not allow for reimbursement of faith based curriculum. |
#2 | What is an AWR? | An AWR is an “Assignment Work Record.” This is filled out every 20 school days and submitted to Gateway Academy by the homeschooling parent. The AWR consists of an attendance record, work samples from the core curriculum being used for each subject taught, skills taught, and a P.E. log. The AWR is the responsibility of the homeschooling parent to complete and turn in to Gateway every 20 school days. |
#3 | What is a teaching consultant? | The homeschooling parent is the teacher of record. They are responsible for lesson planning, teaching curriculum, grading, tracking academic progress, and completing AWR’s. A teaching consultant is a credentialed public school teacher that is assigned to you to assist in choosing a curriculum, verifying and signing AWR’s, consulting with families at least every 20 school days, and answering any questions about reimbursements, field trips, etc. The responsibility of the consulting teacher is to assist the homeschooling parent with teaching strategies, additional resources, and any other support they might need. |
#4 | What is the difference between instructional materials vs. curriculum? | Instructional materials are materials and supplies which are used to support the homeschool parent in teaching a specific skill, (e.g. manipulatives for math, science kits, etc.). Curriculum is the overall content or program taught throughout the course of the entire school year. It is purchased at the end of the school year to be used throughout the course of the next school year. All non-consumable instructional materials and curriculum are the property of Gateway Academy and must be returned after use. |
#5 | Can I go on field trips? | Yes! You may spend up to $150 out of your annual stipend for parent-initiated field trips. You will need to have the field trip request submitted and approved by the consulting teacher prior to going on the outing. Entrance fees are reimbursable for each student and an accompanying adult, (receipts must reflect only Gateway students and an accompanying adult), up to the $150 allowance. School-sponsored field trips, (e.g. Fresno Zoo) do not require a field trip request to be submitted. Entrance fees are reimbursable for each student and an accompanying adult and will be charged to the student's stipend account and do not count towards the $150 allowance |
#6 | What are enrichment classes? Can everyone attend? | These classes are taught by the consulting teachers and provide students an opportunity to come on campus and socialize with other homeschooling students. |
#7 | Can I get reimbursed for extracurricular activities? | Yes! Reimbursement for a service or activity not directly provided by Gateway Academy, (e.g. art classes, dance, karate, piano, tutoring, etc.), will only be made to vendors on the approved vendors list. This vendor list is published on the Gateway Academy website. The reimbursable services or activities must be provided within the current school year calendar. You may submit reimbursement for extracurricular activities after the service is provided. |
