Pumpkin Patch Time!

Gateway students got a first-hand look at pumpkin farming this week.  Some 20 students, accompanied by parents and staff spent Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the RAM Farms Pumpkin Patch.  The day began with a story on the life of a pumpkin from seed to harvest.  The students then got a hands-on opportunity to learn about the sizes and shapes of various pumpkins.  A visit to the pumpkin patch wouldn’t be complete without hitting the corn maze.  However, before the students got a chance to get lost, they first participated in an activity to see how Geo Positioning Satellites (GPS) are used to design and cut out the corn maze.  Then they got lost.  Once everyone had been gathered back up, it was pumpkin picking time.  After a brief snack, the students had a little free time before we headed back home.  Students, parents, and staff all commented on what good time everyone had and how great it was to have these types of opportunities.  Definitely, a BIG round of thanks are in order to Gateway’s Community Outreach committee, who planned the event and also have several more in the works, so stay tuned!

Gateway just released the updated version of the digital AWR.  The updates were based on feedback from our recent parent/staff AWR review and represent our continuing effort to simplify our procedures.  Other recommendations currently in the works include things like a revised HS AWR,  examples of student work samples, informational videos and resources, and work sample collection tips and tricks.  On the office side, we will be working with our business office to review the current reimbursement form to see what can be done to make it more user-friendly.

Lastly, a big thanks to those of you who responded to our recent parent survey.  We are currently reviewing the responses and mapping out ways we can improve our practices to better support all of you.  Of particular interest, was the information received on material recommendations for our resource room/library.  The staff is working on getting the current room inventoried and organized and is almost finished relocating all curriculum materials to room 2 to make room for the new materials.  We are also working with the business office on budget as well as lining vendors for supplies.  Our goal is to have everything ready to go sometime after the first of the year and we will keep you posted on our progress.
