Enrichment Classes

TK-2nd Grade Reading Fluency Club

The vision of this reading club is to get multiple leveled books into the hands of our young students. The ability to read fluently is one of the most important skills a young student can attain. Literacy stretches imagination and stimulates interests. Because fluency develops along a personal continuum, each student will be begin with 2-3 books at their reading level to practice and master. This enrichment opportunity will allow children to read one-on-one with a Gateway teacher each week to gain fluency and increase comprehension.

If you would like your student to join the Fluency Club, you can email Sue or Wendy at sthompson@sjcoe.net or wmerseth@sjcoe.net with a simple “Count me in.” If you would like to participate but cannot make it to the weekly check-in, we are happy to Facetime or use Google Hangouts to check in and reward your student.

Book of the Month Club is Back!

Becoming a strong independent reader is such a crucial part of each child’s education that Gateway would like to support your current curriculum by offering the Book of the Month Club. Starting in January each month, we will offer a school wide book project with any book you choose. At the beginning of the month, we will send out the Book Project instructions, and on the last Wednesday of each month, we will have a presentation hour to share your book and project with others. For students grades 3-6.

Here is the list of book projects that we will be offering:

January –  Book in a Box

Each child will decorate a shoe box to represent his/her book and fill it with objects that represent different parts of the book.

February –  Famous Person

Each student will read about a famous person of his/her choice and create a poster to represent that person that they will share with others.

March – Creating a Mobile

Each student will create a mobile using the four story elements of the book.

April – 3D Model

Each student will make a 3D model of the main character of the book using items from around your home.

The Book Club is available for all independent readers. However, most of these projects are aimed for kids in grades 3-6. If you would like your student(s) to be a part of one, two, or all of these book projects, simply respond to Sarah Shank at sshank@sjcoe.net with a simple “Count me in” reply and then we will put you on an email list. You will get instructions at the beginning of each month. If your student would like to participate but cannot make it to the presentation, he/she can also present it at your home visit!
